Hey lovely one, thanks for joining me on this week’s blog post, all about relaxation in pregnancy.
Pregnancy is such an exciting time, but it can also be full of stress and anxiety at times, depending on your stage of pregnancy and whether you have any complications, scans or appointments that you’re not really looking forward to. As you navigate all the changes happening in your body and life, finding ways to relax during pregnancy is so important, whether this is your first baby or fifth (and I think you’d need the relaxation even more if it’s your fifth baby!) Let’s look at why relaxation during pregnancy is so important for both you and your baby.
The Importance of Relaxation in Pregnancy
Reducing Stress Levels: we all know stress is a part of life, but too much of it during pregnancy can lead to some serious issues. High stress can lead to increased blood pressure, premature labour, and even affect your baby’s weight. By prioritising relaxation during pregnancy, you can create a calmer environment for your baby to grow, which is a win-win!
Improved Mood:Â pregnancy can be such an emotional rollercoaster right! Mood swings and anxiety are totally normal, but they can be tough to handle. Finding relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or pregnancy relaxation courses, can help you chill out and stay positive. When you feel good emotionally, it also benefits your baby!
Better Sleep: sleeping can be so hard when you’re pregnant especially in the last trimester, what with all the changes happening in your body and with your baby. Relaxation techniques can reduce anxiety and stress, which can help you get better quality sleep, leaving you feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever the day brings.
Improved Blood Flow: when you’re relaxed, your body works better. Relaxation promotes better blood flow and circulation, which are essential for you and your baby’s health, ensuring they receive adequate oxygen and nutrients. One of the main things your uterus (your birthing muscle) needs is a good blood supply as this is where the oxygen comes from It’s also so important to maximise your oxytocin levels, the hormone that is responsible for your labour - without it labour doesn’t exist! Learn all about increasing your oxygen and oxytocin levels in my pregnancy relaxation course and antenatal hypnobirthing courses.
Pain Management: relaxation techniques can help get rid of any discomfort and tension in the body, potentially reducing the severity of pregnancy related pains and making you feel more comfortable throughout your pregnancy.
Easier Labour: staying relaxed now can actually help you during labour too! A calm mindset and calm body can make it easier to manage the feelings of labour when the time comes, potentially leading to a smoother delivery and better outcomes. The relaxation techniques you’ll learn in my pregnancy relaxation course and practice throughout the rest of your pregnancy will really help cope with contractions during labour.
Boosting Your Immune System: did you know that stress can weaken your immune system? By keeping your stress levels down, you’ll help your body stay strong and healthy throughout your pregnancy. This means you can focus on what really matters—getting ready for your baby!
Bonding with Baby: Taking time to relax allows you the opportunity to connect with your baby, enhancing emotional bonds, which is so important to me for all ladies who attend my pregnancy relaxation sessions.
Easy Pregnancy Relaxation Tips
Ready to get your relaxation game on? Here are some simple ideas to try:
Deep Breathing: Take a few minutes each day to just breathe. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a second, and exhale slowly through your mouth (try and make your exhale double the inhale if you can). I teach 3 amazing breathing techniques during my antenatal course, all useful at different stages of labour. These help to keep you calm, relaxed and make sure your uterus receives maximum oxygen and blood - both essential for labour to work well.
Pregnancy Relaxation: joining a course with other pregnant mummies-to-be can be so beneficial. Not only will you learn some great breathing & relaxation techniques to help stay calm during pregnancy and labour, but you’ll meet other women, learn some really useful information for birth, help prepare for the big day and have time to relax and connect with your baby on a regular basis. Find out more and book on to my next Pregnancy Relaxation course here!
Pregnancy Yoga: Joining a pregnancy yoga class is a fun way to relax and stretch. Many positions are perfect for relieving pregnancy discomfort. I can highly recommend Tash’s class at YogaBellies Farnborough, Fleet and Camberley - she runs classes for pregnancies, babies and women too so something for everyone.
Meditation: Spend some time meditating to clear your mind and boost your mood. It’ll calm your nervous system, help you feel more present and enable you to tune into your instincts - all absolutely essential for a positive birth experience, regardless of where or how you give birth.
Visualisation: visualising a happy memory or something positive you want to happen (e.g. your baby moving down the birth canal, or holding your baby in your arms) can be so powerful at changing the way your brain thinks and boosting those essential hormones oxytocin and endorphins (your body’s natural pain relief!)
Nature Walks: Get outside! A walk in nature can help lift your spirits and reduce stress.
Journalling: Writing down your thoughts can help you process your feelings and find some clarity. When you come to my pregnancy relaxation sessions part of each sessions will be spent doing a few minutes journalling, getting your thoughts down, reducing any worries, writing to your baby and jotting down ideas for birth that come up through out group discussion.
Final Relaxation Thoughts
Staying relaxed during pregnancy isn’t just a nice idea—it’s essential for your wellbeing and your baby’s too! By making relaxation a priority, you’ll not only have a healthier pregnancy but also a smoother labour and a stronger bond with your little one. So take a deep breath, embrace this amazing journey, and enjoy every moment…you’ve got this!
